St Kilda has announced Josh Battle has signed a new two-year deal to remain at Moorabbin, tying him to the club until at least the end of 2024.

Battle has played 75 games since his debut in 2017, including 19 in 2022 in what has been a career best season.

The 23-year-old has become a key part of the Saints backline this season, stepping up in the absence of Dougal Howard over the last month.

The young utility's new deal ends months of speculation around his playing future, impressing around the competition as he averages 16.9 disposals, 7.1 marks and 299 metres gained per game.

“We’re proud to have Josh sign with us for the next two seasons,” St Kilda Head of List Management James Gallagher said.

“Josh is a hard-working, dedicated young man who plays his role for the team week-in week-out.

“He’s a fierce competitor on-field who is willing to put his body on the line, which has earned him a great deal of respect from his teammates.

“Since joining to the club at 17-years-old, Josh’s commitment to improve as a footballer and a person has been unwavering.

“His performances are a reflection of that commitment, plus a growing maturity that we have seen in Josh and a number of his teammates.

“We look forward to seeing more of Josh in the years ahead and hope to see his development continue to have an influence on those around him.”

Speaking to media earlier on Wednesday, Saints coach Brett Ratten praised the young Saint for his contribution thus far to the club.

"He's played some great footy for us," Ratten said.

"It's been one for him in regards to getting some continuity in his role and where he plays.

"It's great. He's a great guy."
