How each AFL team has used their 2025 draft picks in the past

Draft time often leaves AFL fans searching for omens or wanting to snap unwanted trends of the past. Each club has its good and bad draft tales that have either set them up for the long haul or hampered their list builds at critical junctures. The 2025 AFL Draft could do the same for several teams, who will be hoping their current suite of selections uncovers some diamonds in the rough. Looking at every AFL team's draft hand for the 2025 count, here's how each side has fared with their current selections historically. Adelaide Picks: 16, 48, 55, 64, 73, 75 Some club icons were recruited to the Crows with their range of selections, with none better than Adelaide's all-time leading goalkicker in Taylor Walker, at Pick 75. That selection also netted them Ken McGregor and Ben Davis. Pick 16 secured the likes of Brett Burton, Richard Douglas and Ned McHenry over the years, while David Mackay is one of five players to be drafted by the Crows at Pick 48. Pick 16: Brett Burton, Richard Douglas, Ned McHenry Pick 48: Lucas Herbert, Matthew Smith, Alan Obst, David Mackay, Lachlan Gollant Pick 55: N/A Pick 64: Nick Gill, Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Lachlan Sholl Pick 73: N/A Pick 75: Ken McGregor, Taylor Walker, Ben Davis Brisbane Picks: 17, 23, 44, 51, 59, 68, 79 The Lions have used Pick 17 once, and it just so happens that they landed premiership midfielder Jarrod Berry with that selection in 2016. Brisbane has found little success with the other picks they'll carry into the 2025 count, with current defender-ruck hybrid Zane Zakostelsky one who is highly-rated after being selected at Pick 51 a couple of years ago. Pick 17: Jarrod Berry Pick 23: Ben Thomas, Matthew Moody, Marco Paparone, Alex Witherden Pick 44: Jonathan Solomon, Shane Morrison, Anthony Corrie, Liam Dawson Pick 51: Joe Wilson, Adam Williamson, Scott Ralph, Zane Zakostelsky Pick 59: Luke Hammond, Jaxon Prior Pick 68: Peter Whyte Pick 79: David Brown Carlton Picks: 9, 11, 43, 54, 67, 72 It's not pretty reading for Carlton, who carries two early selections into night one of this year's draft. Jordan Russell, who played 116 games for the Blues, is their only ever Pick 9 selection, while Troy Sporn and Troy Menzel join current flanker Ollie Hollands as Pick 11 recruits at Princes Park. Coincidentally, the two selections Carlton used in 2024 to secure father-son pair Ben and Lucas Camporeale are at their disposal once more - Picks 43 and 54. Pick 9: Jordan Russell Pick 11: Trent Sporn, Troy Menzel, Oliver Hollands Pick 43: Adrian Whitehead, Marcus Davies, Ben Camporeale Pick 54: Michael Sexton, Leigh Snooks, Nick Graham, Lucas Camporeale Pick 67: Ben Judd, Tony Bourke, Brett Blackwell, Joe Anderson, Andrew McInnes Pick 72: Brad Fisher, Adrian Deluca Collingwood Picks: 39, 45, 56, 61, 77 The Magpies have struggled to draft key forwards over the years, with their best being Travis Cloke at Pick 29 in 2004 as a father-son selection. They have access to NGA talent Zac McCarthy this year, a 199cm tall forward, in what could be a good omen for Collingwood. Premiership defender Nathan Murphy is also a former Pick 39 selection. Some memorable names in Alex Fasolo and Trent Bianco were taken with Pick 45, while the Pick 56 was used last year on WA's Will Hayes. Pick 39: Scott Russell, Jason Wild, Travis Cloke, Nathan Murphy Pick 45: Scott Thompson, Jarrad Blight, Alex Fasolo, Trent Bianco, Arlo Draper Pick 56: Shayne Bennett, Ben Kinnear, Will Hayes Pick 61: Stephen Zavalas, Jaxson Barham Pick 77: Steven Pitt, Marcus Barham, Trent Stubbs, Jonathon Marsh, Atu Bosenavulagi Essendon Picks: 5, 6, 21, 27, 30 Essendon have used Pick 5 four times, finding mixed, but mostly good, results. 1996 selection Daniel McAlister played just six games in the red and black, while more contemporary options in Michael Hurley, Darcy Parish and Elijah Tsatas have been more beneficial. Pick 6 has been less successful, with the Dons having used it four times for a return of Andrew Rogers, Kepler Bradley, David Myers and Aaron Francis. Current players Mason Redman and Harrison Jones were both former Pick 30 selections and have proven to be solid finds at that point of the draft. Pick 5: Daniel McAlister, Michael Hurley, Darcy Parish, Elijah Tsatas Pick 6: Andrew Rogers, Kepler Bradley, David Myers, Aaron Francis Pick 21: Richard Ambrose, Willie Dick, Tim Williams Pick 27: Kieran Murrihy, Ted Richards, Darren Walsh Pick 30: Andrew Lee, Mason Redman, Harrison Jones Fremantle Picks: 20, 47, 69 Dockers fans will be buoyed by the fact they landed club legend Nat Fyfe with Pick 20, which will open their count this month. They have, however, used that selection two more times since securing the eventual two-time Brownlow Medal winner, recruiting Jayden Pitt and Hayden Crozier for a combined 79 games. Former ruckman Lloyd Meek was a shrewd selection at Pick 69 in 2017, while Kepler Bradley features in this exercise for the second time. Pick 20: Nat Fyfe, Jayden Pitt, Hayden Crozier Pick 47: N/A Pick 69: Daniel Haines, Kepler Bradley, Lloyd Meek Geelong Picks: 19, 40, 60, 78 It doesn't get bigger for Cats fans than Gary Ablett Jr. The little master, while a father-son selection, proved to be a bargain at Pick 40 in the 2001 super draft. The Cats have gone on to do great things with that same selection, adding premiership pair Allen Christensen and Tom Stewart. They also used Pick 19 on Sam De Koning in 2019, while they found Quinton Narkle with Pick 60 three years prior. Pick 19: Sam De Koning Pick 40: Gary Ablett, Allen Christensen, Tom Stewart Pick 60: Pat Gribble, Adam Donohue, Quinton Narkle Pick 78: Damian Crowe, Orren Stephenson Gold Coast Picks: 15, 18, 24, 28, 29, 36, 52 Former captain Touk Miller is the standout historical selection from the Suns' 2025 draft hand, which will look much different come the cessation of this year's count. Gold Coast landed Miller with Pick 29 in 2014 in what has been one of their best draft plays. There's been little success elsewhere, though, while they've never used Picks 18, 28 or 36 at an AFL Draft. Pick 15: Jarrod Garlett Pick 18: N/A Pick 24: Henry Schade Pick 28: N/A Pick 29: Touk Miller Pick 36: N/A Pick 52: Mackenzie Willis, Brayden Crossley GWS Picks: 12, 35 The Giants are yet to get any bang for their buck on Pick 12, which they've used on three occasions. Both Kristian Jaksch and Tanner Bruhn departed for Victorian clubs in a matter of years after joining GWS, while 2023 selection Phoenix Gothard is an unknown commodity. The New South Wales side is yet to use Pick 35. Pick 12: Kristian Jaksch, Tanner Bruhn, Phoenix Gothard Pick 35: N/A Hawthorn Picks: 10, 22, 62, 76 It's not great reading for the Hawks, however, Luke McPharlin was a key piece in a trade with Fremantle that saw the club secure Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell at the subsequent draft. Mitch Lewis was a shrewd Mitch Lewis at Pick 76 in 2016. Pick 10: Rod Lester-Smith, Luke McPharlin Pick 22: Greg Hodson, Simon Crawshay, Beau Muston, Kieran Lovell Pick 62: Ben Herrald Pick 76: Mitch Lewis Melbourne Picks: 7, 8, 37, 66, 71 Between Picks 7 and 8, the Demons have been on the clock just once, selecting Caleb Windsor with Pick 7 in 2023. They haven't had much luck with their later picks, but Harrison Petty and Nathan Brown have been serviceable at selections 37 and 66 overall. Pick 7: Caleb Windsor Pick 8: N/A Pick 37: Andrew Obst, Harrison Petty Pick 66: Nathan Brown, Ryan Ferguson, Tom McNamara Pick 71: Glenn Wilkins North Melbourne Picks: 25, 26, 46, 57 The Kangaroos have used Pick 46 five times, the most recent being Curtis Taylor in 2018. The cream of the crop is two-time premiership player and All-Australian David King in 1993, however. North Melbourne had Pick 57 last year, adding Luke Urquhart out of WA. Pick 25: Callum Urch, Aaron Black, Daniel Nielson Pick 26: Chris Groom, Brayden George Pick 46: Gary Brooker, Simon McCarty, David King, Josh Robertson, Curtis Taylor Pick 57: Luke Urquhart Port Adelaide Picks: 49 While 31-gamer Mitch Farmer didn't prove to be fruitful from the 2007 draft, current key forward Ollie Lord is emerging as a steal at that point of the draft. The Power, however, are unlikely to use the selection in 2025, instead placing their focus on future counts and rookie list promotions. Pick 49: Mitch Farmer, Ollie Lord Richmond Picks: 3, 4, 38 When you're drafting at Picks 3 and 4, you might want a little bit more success, but the coup of Dustin Martin certainly makes up for the others. The triple Norm Smith Medal winner is somehow considered a steal despite being on the podium of the 2009 draft, which proved to be a tricky one for other clubs. Mutphy played just 12 games in the yellow and black, while Aaron Fiora and Richard Tambling were taken ahead of Matthew Pavlich and Lance Franklin at their respective drafts. Pick 3: Justin Murphy, Aaron Fiora, Dustin Martin Pick 4: Richard Anderson, Richard Tambling Pick 38: N/A St Kilda Picks: 50, 65 The Suns have used both of their 2025 selections just once each in the past. Hugo Garcia at Pick 50 in 2023 is showing good signs quickly, while getting no games out of the recruitment of Craig Callaghan at Pick 65 in 2003 probably stings, despite him being a very late selection. Pick 50: Hugo Garcia Pick 65: Craig Callaghan Sydney Picks: 31, 32, 42, 63 Three swings and three differing results for the Swans in the low 30s. Jarred Moore played 68 games for the Bloods, earning a return of 52 goals to be a mediocre recruit all in all. George Hewett was a great find at Pick 32 in 2013; however, he departed Sydney before reaching career-best form at Carlton. Errol Gulden could be one of the greatest to play for the club by the time his career reaches a conclusion, with an asterisk coming on his selection given his ties as an Academy recruit. Pick 31: Jarred Moore Pick 32: George Hewett, Errol Gulden Pick 42: N/A Pick 63: N/A West Coast Picks: 1, 2, 13, 34, 41, 53, 58 The Eagles have recruited three club icons when starting at the top of the order, adding dual premiership player Drew Banfield and ruckman Michael Gardiner before more recently landing wunderkind Harley Reid. Pick 2 has been a little more polarising, with 1988 selection Todd Breman managing just the 23 games for the Eagles, while Nic Naitanui was a star of the competition who was unfortunately limited by injury. Premiership captain Shannon Hurn is one of five players to join the Eagles via Pick 13, with other flag Eagles in Michael Braun and Adam Selwood being previous Pick 53 recruits. Pick 1: Drew Banfield, Michael Gardiner, Harley Reid Pick 2: Todd Breman, Nic Naitanui Pick 13: Callum Chambers, Shannon Hurn, Brad Ebert, Daniel Venables, Jarrod Brander Pick 34: Travis Burton, Andrew Williams, Matthew Spangher Pick 41: Kane Munro Pick 53: Michael Braun, Adam Selwood Pick 58: Ben Johnson, Noah Long Western Bulldogs Picks: 14, 33, 70, 74 There's little to like from the Western Bulldogs' history with this draft hand, despite using Pick 14 on four occasions. The same goes for their later selections, with Luke Penny perhaps being their most fruitful. Pick 14: Trevor Clisby, Michael Martin, Luke Penny, Ayce Cordy Pick 33: Rod Gunn, Brad Murphy Pick 70: Wayde Skipper, Fergus Greene Pick 74: Paul Campbell, Paul Digiovine, Jayden Schofield, Callum Porter
