This weekend's historic Perth Grand Final will be legendary commentator Dennis Cometti's swansong behind the microphone.

The cherished pundit will call Saturday night's clash between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs with Triple M Perth in what will be a fitting farewell for the Western Australian.

Cometti's commentary career began in the early 1970s, having announced a state match between Western Australia and Victoria at Subiaco.

The 72-year-old has since had heralded stints with the ABC, Channel 7, the Nine Network and on radio to culminate 50 years of commentary coverage.

Speaking on Triple M Breakfast with Basil, Xav & JennaCometti revealed this weekend's season-decider will be his last match from the commentary gantry.

"This is it," he said.

"After it's finished and you're walking out the door, you'll think 'well, it's been good', you know.

"If it's a good game, all the better."

Cometti will be accompanied by his son Mark as he calls the final game of his career.

Last year Cometti was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and was added to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame the year prior.

Fittingly, the veteran pundit will be inducted into WA Football Hall of Fame later this month.
