Outgoing Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Andrew Westacott has stated he would be open to contending for the AFL chief executive role should interest in his services arise.
Westacott this week decided against extending his contract as the Australian Grand Prix boss beyond next year, with next Autumn's Formula 1 race to be his final at the helm.
Following 15 years in charge, Westacott will leave his post and begin assessing his options for what comes next, with his departure coinciding with Gillon McLachlan's at AFL House.
Last month the AFL confirmed McLachlan's exit from the top job would be delayed until after Gather Round next year in April, with a list of key business decisions still needing to be finalised as the league searches for his successor.
With the F1 Grand Prix concluding in early April, Westacott could firm as a candidate for the position.
Speaking toย 3AW,ย the former 2006 Commonwealth Games key figure said he'd be open to a discussion with AFL chairman Richard Goyder for the CEO role.
"When I walked into the office this morning and it said 103 days to go to the Grand Prix... that's the biggest task we've got. In parallel with that, obviously I've got to look to the future but I haven't thought terribly far and wide just yet," Westacott said.
"I love organising, I love (Melbourne), I have a passion for sport and everything there is to love about football.
"So whatever comes my way as a consideration (will be welcomed), but I love footy and I think the AFL is in great shape given what Gil has done for the sport."
When asked in the chance that Goyder approached Westacott, he said he'd be keen to chat.
"Of course I'd talk to him," he said.
"But no, I haven't spoken to them at all."
A front-runner for the AFL CEO position is yet to emerge, however the likes of senior AFL figures Travis Auld and Andrew Dillon, Richmond chief Brendon Gale, Sydney boss Tom Harley and Western Bulldogs president Kylie Watson-Wheeler have previously been linked to the job.
Gather Round will commence on April 13 next year and will run across the fifth round of the home and away season.
