Sydney champion Adam Goodes has declined an offer to have a Grand Final lap of honour.

Goodes quietly stepped away from the game on Saturday night, announcing his retirement to his teammates behind closed doors and he will also be absent as fellow retiring players are farewelled in the traditional motorcade at the MCG on Grand Final day.

The decision to avoid the procession looks to have been driven by the prospect of being booed again.
