Former Fremantle star midfielder Paul Hasleby has revealed the top seven midfielders in the AFL he'd build a team around if he was starting from scratch.

On Sportsday radio, Hasleby was asked to look around the competition for not just the best midfielder in the league, but the one you would pick first if you had to build a franchise from the ground up.

Hasleby confirmed on the show his decision wasn't made purely based on 2019 form, and suggested the decision would be made using a number of different factors.

The Dockers legend has three Brownlow Medalists in his list, with Fremantle's Nat Fyfe narrowly edging out Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield as the player Hasleby would pick first for a new team.

Hasleby's top seven list

7. Clayton Oliver
6. Lachie Neale
5. Dustin Martin
4. Marcus Bontempelli
3. Patrick Cripps
