Former AFL footballer and respected recruiting executive Matt Rendell passed away on Wednesday, aged 64, after suffering a cardiac arrest last Sunday.

Rendell played 177 games for Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears between 1981-92, winning two best and fairest awards with the Lions.

Post his playing career, Rendell embarked on a career in AFL recruiting, enjoying stints with both the Adelaide Crows and Collingwood.

Rendell's wife, Leonie, released a statement on Wednesday on behalf of the Rendell family.

"It is with great sadness that I am releasing this statement in regards to the condition of Matthew Rendell.

"Matthew passed away this afternoon, after suffering a cardiac arrest Sunday morning. He did not regain consciousness.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of the first responders and the staff at the Victorian Heart Hospital.

"The Rendell family would like to express gratitude towards everyone who has been supportive at this time."
