Dustin Martin's season has been the most impressive so far in 2017, given the quality of his play last season, according to the AFL's Player Ratings.

The official AFL Player Ratings look at every single action a player makes in a game, and have devised a system to work out which players are the best in the competition.

According to the ratings, Martin received an average rating of 13.4 a game last season, and finished the year as the 39th best player on the rankings table.

Fast forward 12 months to this season, and Martin is having a career-year, and is one of the hot favourites for the Brownlow Medal alongside Patrick Dangerfield.

Martin's output in 2017 has been phenomenal, as the 26-year-old is averaging 21.0 points per game, and is ranked second in the competition so far this season, with a rating differential of +7.7 from 2016 compared to 2017.

Elliot Yeo (+7.6 differential) is just behind Martin, while Ben McEvoy (+6.0), Brandon Ellis (+5.9) and Matthew Kreuzer (+5.1) are the only other players above a differential of +5.

When looking at players who have dropped off the most in 2017, Hawthorn veteran Josh Gibson is struggling the most after a decent 2016 campaign.

Gibson is averaging a measly 6.5 from his 12 games, which equates to a differential of -5.0, and an overall rank of 317th in the competition.

GWS veterans Steve Johnson (-4.3) and Heath Shaw (-3.6) are both in the top four, although the player in third position would surprise most fans.

Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray, who has been an important member of the Power's side so far in 2017, has struggled to back up the lofty expectations he set for himself last season, and currently has a differential of -3.9.

It's not too bad for Gray when you look at the ratings at a whole, as he's ranked 37th in the league, after ranking in third in 2016.
