Geelong champion Patrick Dangerfield has hit out at The Footy Show and panel member Sam Newman in particular, labelling the former Cats star as "irrelevant."

The 71-year-old came under fire from viewers and members of the LGBTIQ community after comments he made during Wednesday night's show relating to Caitlyn Jenner.

Following a gag that placed a picture of Newman next to Jenner's, fellow panelist Billy Brownless asked Newman if he knew who Jenner was, with Newman replying "I know who he ... it is … oh well what is she? Is it a he or a she? Is it transgender, is it?"

Host Craig Hutchinson tried to move on from the subject quickly, although the damage had already been done. Newman issued a statement on Thursday relating to his comments.

"I regret the comments I made about Caitlyn Jenner. What I said was not appropriate and I'm sorry to anyone offended," the statement said.

Dangerfield was asked about the comments on radio station KIIS 101.1 on Friday morning, and slammed Newman from his out of touch views.

"From my point of view I just think he is irrelevant," Dangerfield said.

"The show itself, apart from Bec (co-host Rebecca Maddern), who is wonderful, I haven't watched it for a while now and I just think Sam was well off the mark and well out of line.

"It's been a history. It's been something that has been happening for such a long period of time and they will continue to run with it because it will continue to rate.

"It will be interesting to see what happens come the end of the season."
