Star Adelaide midfielder, Rory Sloane, has taken out the inaugural AFL Players' Association Player of the Month award.

The AFL Players’ Association announced the new award on Tuesday, with every player voting to decide which player takes home the gong, with the winner to automatically be nominated for the AFL Players’ MVP Award given to the best player at the end of the season.

Each month six players are nominated by past winners of the AFLPA MVP Leigh Matthews, Gerard Healy, Tim Watson and Chris Judd.

The current players then vote for the winner.

This month's nominees were Joel Selwood (Geelong), Zach Merrett (Essendon), Ollie Wines (Port Adelaide), Rory Sloane (Adelaide), Eddie Betts (Adelaide) and Dustin Martin (Richmond).

Sloane received 59 per cent of the votes for April, with Martin receiving 16 per cent and Betts nine per cent.

Sloane has had a stellar start to the season, averaging 29.5 disposals and 9.7 tackles per game.
