After Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast made history in round eight this season with the first AFL match in China, Adelaide and Essendon are playing to follow suit.

The two clubs have pinpointed India as the next destination for Aussie Rules football, with the Bombers and Crows looking to play a pre-season match on the subcontinent.

Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell said the joint venture with Adelaide presented both clubs with an opportunity to further grow the game overseas and get the Indian audience behind the game.

"It's a different way to look at growing the game and we believe in working closely with Adelaide and the AFL [so] we can best position ourselves to make a significant impact," Campbell told Newscorp.

"We have seen positive growth in the Indian community participating in our Auskick and community programs, attending our games and signing up as members.

"We believe the time is right to increase the scope and intensity of our commitment.

"Although our discussions with Adelaide have not been built on the prospect of playing home and away football abroad, there is the opportunity to consider an exhibition or pre-season game in India."

India has a population of 1.3 billion people, and is the second most populated country in the world behind China.

Essendon will host Adelaide in round 21 at Etihad Stadium later this season, with the match to take on an Indian theme, with Hindi and Punjabi commentary teams featuring in the broadcast.
