Port Adelaide champion Kane Cornes has slammed Adelaide and Gold Coast for letting go of Brisbane star Jarryd Lyons for next to nothing.

The Crows denied Lyons a contract he thought he was worth during 2016, where he was eventually traded to the Suns with an exchange of late-round picks going both ways.

Lyons was listed with the Suns for the 2017 and 2018 seasons before he was delisted with a year left on his three-year deal.

The Crows claimed the wooden spoon this season and the Suns finished just four places above them while Lyons will line up for the Lions next week, one win away from a grand final appearance.

“It’s a bizarre story and one I’m still struggling to get my head around,” Cornes said on SEN’s Whateley.

“I know it has had a bit of media coverage over the years, he was traded by Adelaide for a pick in the 40s because they weren’t offering a contract that he thought was fair and then Gold Coast delisted him with a year left on his deal.

“How’s the arrogance from Adelaide who have just finished last to think they can ship off Jarryd Lyons and more so the arrogance from Gold Coast to think that he’s not in their future plans.

“He’s a top 50 player in the game now and I reckon if he were still at Adelaide, he would be their best player. I cannot believe it.

“He was best on ground in a qualifying final and continues to stand up, I was really impressed with his performance for Brisbane.”

Lyons has averaged 21 touches and five clearances in 2020 and was one of Brisbane's best players during Friday night's qualifying final win over Richmond.
