It is a major blow for the Pies just a month out from the season, with the gun midfielder coming off a career-best campaign.
Adams averaged 22.6 disposals, 5.4 tackles and 5.2 clearances in all 19 games for the Magpies in 2020, claiming his maiden All Australian blazer and best and fairest.
It adds to Collingwood's pre-season injury list - with Jordan De Goey missing a week of training due to an abdomen issue and young pairย Will Kelly and Reef McInnes sustaining calf and finger injuriesย respectively.
Collingwood face Richmond in their sole pre-season clash on Friday March 5 and then open the season proper against the Western Bulldogs on Friday March 19.
