Collingwood will step up attempts to re-sign young defender Matt Scharenberg before Adelaide has a chance to poach him as part of any Patrick Dangerfield deal.

South Australian mates Scharenberg and Brisbane Lion James Aish are among the Crows’ key trade targets if free agent Dangerfield departs at season’s end.

Industry figures are convinced Dangerfield will join the Cats to be closer to his Moggs Creek family, helping clear almost $1 million in the Crows’ salary cap.

Collingwood will ramp up negotiations with Scharenberg’s manager Ned Guy from McDonald Sports over the next month, confident the No. 6 pick in the 2013 national draft will re-commit to the fast-paced rebuild under coach Nathan Buckley.
