Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield could face eight weeks on the sidelines as his ankle injury is believed to be worse than first thought.

The Cats midfielder sustained the injury in the third term of Sunday's win over North Melbourne, with the 31-year-old failing to finish in the match.

AFL.com.au reported on Tuesday that the club have been sweating on the results of scans, with Dangerfield potentially in line to be sidelined for "multiple weeks".

It is understood that the Cats veteran has suffered a syndesmosis tear, with the latest reports by SEN suggesting the Brownlow medallist could miss the next two months of action should Geelong opt for surgery.

Dangerfield reportedly flew to Sydney on Tuesday for further assessment on the ankle injury, with the diagnosis leaving the Cats star with two options; rest or surgery.

The Cats welcomed back Dangerfield from a three-week suspension in Round 5, with the powerful onballer and captain Joel Selwood both sustaining niggles in their clash with the Kangaroos.

Geelong coach Chris Scott has already confirmed star recruit Jeremy Cameron will make his debut in the hoops in Round 6 after battling a hamstring injury sustained on the eve of their season opener.
