Carlton champion Mark Maclure has been brutal in his criticism of Blues forward Mitch McGovern and questioned why the club keeps picking him.
Maclure called McGovern "a flash in the pan guy" after the Blues' loss to St Kilda last week and demanded the club confront him over his form.
The three-time premiership player believes McGovern's spot in the team has to be under scrutiny.
"You can't survive, and this is his average, [on] seven touches a game McGovern. Three marks, one tackle and sometimes he hicks a goal here and there," Maclure said on AFL 360.
"He just doesn't compete. That's the problem we have with this guy, he doesn't compete properly. I don't know what he's supposed to do, I don't know what the standards are... David Teague and the coaching group need to look at this.
"Is there integrity in their selection? Because this has happened every game, it's never got better, it hasn't improved one inch."
Maclure believes the Blues need to give McGovern a "shake up" to improve his game.
"Sometimes you need to shake some people. He got tipped out last year halfway through the year and four weeks off to get fit. Guess what they did? They put him straight back in, they didn't put him in the reserves, they didn't give him a shake up," Maclure said.
"Who is actually the general in the forward line at Carlton? It couldn't be Mitch, I can assure you. It'd probably be Eddie who's the oldest head there. He needs to marshal him and push him and shove him and start to work him, because he doesn't do the basic well.
"He doesn't chase, doesn't tackle, doesn't do all the little though things that you need to do in the forward line to make it work. We want him to be good, we want him to be a really good player, an honest 'doer'. He's a flash in the pan for mine. His highlight package looks fantastic but it doesn't last long.
"He needs to play well and I'd be surprise if they pick him again, they need to shake him."
