Three-time premiership player Cameron Mooney has named his best five captains of the past 20 years.
Mooney, speaking on SEN radio, said former teammate Joel Selwood, as well Nick Riewoldt, James Hird and Paul Kelly were some of the unlucky few to miss out on a spot in his top five.
Mooney's top five captains of the past 20 years:
- Wayne Carey
- Michael Voss
- Luke Hodge
- Mark Ricciuto
- Tom Harley
Mooney said that Harley was not necessarily one of the best players he played with, but his leadership qualities were simply outstanding.
“Two-time premiership captain. The club was in turmoil, disarray and this guy led us from the front. He was absolutely brilliant. What I wanted a captain to be Tom Harley was it," he said.
The former North Melbourne and Geelong player said Wayne Carey was undoubtedly the best captain he had seen, regardless of the off-field controversy that resulted in him leaving the Kangaroos.
“He is the greatest captain in my opinion. Yes, I know he ripped a football club apart, but I’m talking about the man on the field," Mooney said.
“If you saw games that Carey played in you would understand why he’s regarded as arguably the greatest player and his leadership and his ability to take the game by control and win the game of his own bat in those games is why I had him as number one.”
Did Mooney get it right?
