The son of Hawthorn assistant coach Brett Ratten has tragically died in a car accident overnight.

Ratten’s 16-year-old son Cooper, was the rear passenger in a vehicle when it veered off the road and rolled at around 3am on Sunday morning.

He received life threatening injuries and died on the way to hospital.

Hawthorn released a statement a short time ago confirming the tragedy.

“Hawthorn Football Club is deeply saddened to advise Brett Ratten’s son Cooper was involved in a car accident overnight that has claimed the 16-year-old’s life,” the statement said.

“The club asks that media respect Brett’s and the family’s privacy at this tragic time.”

Police said that the 17-year-old front seat passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital and is in Police custody.
