Carlton legend Anthony Koutoufides believes his former side can improve in 2019, after a disastrous season laast year.

The Blues won just two games and were handed the wooden spoon in 2018, but Koutoufides says there's a lot to like about this season's squad, naming their off-season recruits.

Carlton brought in Mitch McGovern, Will Setterfield, Sam Walsh and Liam Stocker, and the former Blues skipper has higher hopes for his side this season.

“Last year was a year everyone wants to forget, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Koutoufides told SEN Breakfast on Wednesday.

“I can’t see (Carlton) going backwards, they’ve got some great inclusions into the list.

“Hopefully they stay injury free, Sam Docherty’s obviously a massive loss already for the guys, but look, they’ve got a young list, they’ve got some really great young players and improvement should come from them.

“I see them going forward no doubt about it.

“I’m a little bit more excited about the upcoming season, but only time will tell.”

Carlton open their 2019 campaign with the traditional season opener against Richmond, before travelling to Port Adelaide, hosting Sydney and visiting Gold Coast over the opening month of the fixture.
