AFL lists sizes are set to be cut to a minimum of 37 and a maximum of 44 players for the 2021 season, according to The Age's Michael Gleeson.

The total amount of primary players will be cut by two and rookie numbers by one from the 2020 total.

It is understood that the league and the AFLPA are close to an agreement on final list sizes, with an official announcement set to be made next week.

Both parties met earlier this week and are set to do so again on Thursday.

Originally, the AFLPA had hoped to have an agreement in place prior to the trade period, with delays now running well into the exchange period.

An agreement surrounding the salary cap is also set to land, with a reported 10 per cent cut to apply, with one per cent of that figure devoted to the retirement fund, according to sources close to Gleeson.

Further discussions surrounding first and second-year players have also been in place, with players in the aforementioned category quarantined from the cuts.

Primary listed player numbers will drop to between 36 and 38 from 38 to 40 players.

For 2021, clubs can have a maximum of 38 primary players and six rookie players on their list for a total of 44 players potentially.

Clubs are allowed to have more than six rookies, but will need to lower their total of primary players to do so.

All clubs must have at least one rookie listed player, with a total minimum of 37 players listed (36 primary and one rookie).
