The Adelaide Crows have announced the signing of highly-rated 2024 draft prospect and father-son option Tyler Welsh to their SANFL squad for next season.
The 17-year-old will make the move to West Lakes from Woodville-West Torrens after a strong year with the Eagles and as a member of South Australia's National Championships team.
Welsh, the son of premiership Crows forward Scott Welsh, booted 27 goals for Woodvile-West Torrens' U18s side this year from 10 matches to emerge as one of the premier bottom-age key forwards in te country.
The 191cm attacker would also feature in three reserves games for the Eagles and played in two games for SA at this year's U18s national carnival, booting seven goals and averaging 7.5 disposals.
A five-goal outing against Vic Country would highlight Welsh's pedigree as a leading prospect for 2024, while he would also earn a selection for the U17s Future Stars game at the MCG on grand final day in September.
To further his development and likely Crows career, Welsh has signed with Adelaide's SANFL side squad for his draft year as part of the league's rookie program.
โWe obviously know Tyler really well, not only through his dad Scott who had a successful playing career with the Club, but also from his involvement with our father-son academy in recent years,โ Adelaide football boss Adam Kelly said on Wednesday.
โThe opportunity for him to work with our coaches and high performance staff will help his development and we are excited about integrating him with our SANFL team next year.โ
Welsh will commence pre-season training later this month as one of several new additions for the Crows, who have also unveiled Wangaratta ruck-forward Toby Murray as a new signing for 2024.
Murray is the younger brother of Adelaide-listed defender Nick Murray, and makes the move to the Crows from Victoria as a 20-year-old.
Adelaide have also added Steve Burton (Gawler South), Jayden Davis (Prince Alfred Old Collegians), Sam Daniele (Broadview), Darcy Clifford (Langhorne Creek) and Austin to their SANFL squad for next season.
The Crows finished the 2023 home and away season in third this year after a 13-win campaign and would bow out of the finals race in the penultimate match of the year through a 17-point loss to Sturt.
