Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney is a chance to return against Collingwood this week, just two weeks after breaking the knuckle bone in his hand against Port Adelaide.

Viney was initially expected to miss around a month of football, but coach Paul Roos said on Thursday that Viney will be named in the 25-man squad for Monday's game and will face a fitness test on Saturday before his inclusion is confirmed.

"He's probably a 50/50 chance to play but we'll name him in the team and if he trains well Saturday and we haven't put him in we'll be kicking ourselves," Roos said.

"If you were a betting man, you'd bet that he's going to play.

"But our job is to decide whether he can functionally perform the way we want him to play and we won't know that until Saturday morning."

Melbourne will go into the Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood as favourties for the first time in over a decade.
