Collingwood champion Dane Swan has confirmed his retirement from AFL football in an email to Collingwood members.

Swan played 258 games in an illustrious career for the Magpies.

He is a premiership player, a five-time All-Australian, three time Collingwood best and fairest winner, AFL Coaches Association player of the year winner and a Brownlow Medalist.

The 32-year-old's career was cut short after suffering a serious foot injury in Round 1 this year.

Despite initially holding out hope of playing again in 2017, the injury has ultimately forced him into retirement.
