Three-time Hawthorn premiership player Jack Gunston says he expects to finalise his new contract with the club very soon.

"It's gradually just getting there. I don't think it should be too far away," Gunston, who comes out of contract at the end of this season, told SEN Radio on Monday morning..

"I love the club. I have only been there for four years now.

"The club and my manager are working through (the terms of a new contract). I am comfortable where it's at at the moment."

With Jarryd Roughead out injured for the first half of the year, Gunston has become the Hawks' most important key forward this season.

He also looms at the club's key forward in the future, with Roughead close to 30 and Gunston just 24 years of age.

The sharp shooter has kicked 200 goals in 89 games for the Hawks, after crossing from the Crows in 2011, after 14 games in two seasons.

He also led the club's goalkicking last season, with 57 majors.
