North Melbourne defender Sam Wright will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after suffering ankle injury during the Roos' win over Richmond on Friday night.

The 25-year-old sprained his left ankle during the third quarter and sat out the remainder of the match.

“Sam will go under the knife in the next few days to repair ligaments in his left ankle,” North Melbourne Director of Football Geoff Walsh told the club's website.

“After having just spent a month on the sidelines having injured his opposite ankle, it’s a tough blow for Sam but we expect him back in time for any potential finals’ campaign.

“We’re hopeful he’ll only miss six to eight weeks.”

The top of the table Roos face the third placed Cats on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.
