Collingwood star Dane Swan is set to miss a large portion of season 2016 after breaking his right leg and fracturing his foot in the Pies' humiliating 80-point loss Sydney Swans at the SCG on Saturday night.

Swan injured his leg less than ten minutes into the opening quarter, limping from the field without registering a possession, taking no further part in the game.

Coach Nathan Buckley confirmed that Swan will have surgery this week.

"He's broken the fibula and he's got some fractures in his foot, so it's significant," Buckley said post-match.

"I don't know what it's going to mean as far as time out.

"He'll need surgery and once that's done that we'll have a better idea for what it means for him for the rest of the year.

"I presume that (surgery) will take place back in Melbourne and that 'Swanny' will travel back with us tomorrow."
