North Melbourne defender Luke McDonald has today had surgery after injuring his hamstring in the Kangaroos' loss to Hawthorn last Friday.

"Surgery a success, thanks for all the messages and well wishes. Look forward to getting back on the park with the boys and building towards the real stuff," McDonald wrote on his Instagram account.

The 21-year-old suffered the injury during a brilliant chase down of Hawks' speedster Cyril Rioli.

AFL.com.au has reported that the club expect McDonald to be sidelined for around eight weeks, meaning he faces a race against time to be fit for the finals.

Meanwhile, Daniel Wells (ankle), Ben Cunnington (corked quad), Jarrad Waite (hip) and Andrew Swallow (concussion) are all still in doubt for this week's clash with Adelaide.
