Essendon veteran Adam Cooney is set to retire at the end of the season.

Channel 7's Mark Stevens reported on Monday evening that Cooney will hang up the boots at season's end after 13 seasons in the AFL.

The 2008 Brownlow Medalist will play his 250th match this weekend against his former side, the Western Bulldogs.

Cooney has played 30 matches for Essendon since making the move from the Bulldogs at the end of 2014.

An official announcement is expected to be made soon.
