UFC fighter Mark Hunt meets with Gary Ablett of the AFL Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium on August 26, 2016 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Gary Ablett's wife, Jordan, has published a heartfelt message to her husband after his decision to step down as captain of the club, citing family issues as the reason for his decision.

The two-time Brownlow Medalist has copped some criticism for opting to take time off from pre-season training to take extra time on a delayed honeymoon, while also being criticised by some pundits for failing to play through pain over the past few seasons.

However, Jordan praised her husband's fortitude ability to put others first.

“The things that I love and admire about you, I don’t see in many … I see you lead in many ways both on and off the field. I see you take phone calls in the middle of the night, open up your house and welcome those who have nowhere to stay, follow up those who are struggling and be generous to all with your time, talent and treasure,” Jordan wrote.

"I see you sit by hospital beds to make sure whoever it is has company and doesn't feel alone, I see you catch up one on one with the boys to remind them that they are a valued and respected member of The Football Club.

G, we've been together for almost four years now and I've had the honour of closely doing life with you every single day since we first met. The things that I love and admire about you, I don't see in many... I see you lead in so many ways both on and off the field. I see you take phone calls in the middle of the night, open up your house and welcome in those who have nowhere to stay, follow up those who are struggling and be generous to all with your time, talent and treasure. I see you sit by hospital beds to make sure whoever it is has company and doesn't feel alone, I see you catch up one on one with the boys to remind them that they are a valued and respected member of The Football Club. I see you fly people back home to spend time with their families when they can't afford to do so themselves, I see you put a spotlight on inappropriate behaviour because you care for the children observing. I see you continually show grace to those who tear you down and only ever speak highly of them when you could so easily bite back and speak the facts. I see you nurse injury after injury, TAKE ANTI-INFLAMS and do absolutely everything possible to get up for each game every single week, just to see the complete opposite make headlines the following day. This is just a glimpse of all that I see and all that I know. G, your leadership goes far beyond a title and much further than a game... You have lead for 6 years now as Captain and although it was difficult for YOU to make the decision to stand down, I know that your influence will be greater than ever before... I'm so proud of you ❤️
