Hawthorn has released a statement on Sam Mitchell's future, following revelations on Wednesday morning he could join West Coast.

“Alastair and Sam had an open conversation, as two friends, about the idea of Sam playing at West Coast and transitioning into a coaching role,"Hawthorn Recruiting and List Manager Graham Wright said.

“The club asked Sam if this was something he would be interested in and if it was an opportunity he would like to explore.

“Sam was interested in the idea and wanted to investigate the possible trade.

“Both Hawthorn and West Coast will continue discussions with Sam focusing on his long-term future.

“There is still a long way to go before any trade decision is made.”

Hawthorn Football Club will not be making any further comment until a decision has been made.
