Western Bulldogs premiership defender Joel Hamling has joined Fremantle.

In exchange for Hamling, the Dogs receive picks 35, 40 and 63 from the Dockers, while picks 43 and 61 have been sent to Fremantle.

Hamling joined the Bulldogs at the end of 2014 as a delisted free agent and played 23 games in two years, including this year's grand final triumph over Sydney.

However, at the end of the season, he requested a trade back to his home state of Western Australia.

“We thank Joel for his contribution over the past two years and wish him all the best for his future with Fremantle,” Western Bulldogs list manager Jason McCartney said.

“We believe we have reached a fair and equitable deal for Joel and will keep our options open as to what we do with our picks ahead of the trade deadline on Thursday.”

The 23-year-old spent three seasons on Geelong's list after being selected with pick 32 in the 2011 National Draft, however, failed to play a senior game at the Cats.
