Brisbane ruckman Archie Smith is recovering in hospital after an encounter with a stingray on New Year's Eve.

The 21-year-old, who made his AFL debut in 2016, stepped on a stingray at Nobby Beach on the morning of December 31.

He was subsequently taken to hospital and had the barb was removed from his foot.

Smith received several stitches in his foot and published the following pictures on social media following the incident.

The recovery process is expected to take a couple of weeks.
