Whitfield, former GWS officials agree to bans

Lachie Whitfield has been banned for six months, while former GWS officials Graeme Allan and Craig Lambert have agreed to 12 month bans following their involvement in the Whitfield drugs saga, according to the Herald Sun.

Whitfield, 22, is accused of hiding at former Giants’ official Craig Lambert’s house in order to avoid drug testers last season, with the help of former GWS football chief, Graeme Allan.

The trio have been sanctioned under the AFL’s disrepute rules and not the anti-doping code, avoiding potential four-year bans from the Australian Anti-doping Agency.

The former No.1 draft pick will begin his ban immediately, meaning he will be eligible to return to the club after Round 8 next season.

Fairfax reported last week that the Giants may also be stripped of draft picks due to the incident.

  1. THIS is exactly what Essendon players SHOUILD have done. Take their punishment full stop. Good on the people involved for being mature unlike the Bombers. You are caught, you pay the price.

  2. Typical afl special deals for the giants why only 6 months and there draft picks should take away their first choice as they will secure an Academy player which will probably equate to a number 1 or 2

  3. What a pack of clowns…. he comes to me with that problem then I’d say “well you are on your own son if you get a test”. Fancy getting involved covering up, terrible leadership

  4. Looks like hiding from the testers paid off then. I think it’s safe to assume if he took the test he’d be facing much more than six months. The AFL has set the precedent that if you are going to test positive, you might as well dodge the test as you have nothing to lose.

  5. Joke AFL can’t be serious about cutting out drug cheats and Administrators that cheat. Whitfield 6 month ban should be longer (full year) and Gubby and Lambert should get life bans. No place in the game for cheats!!
