Carlton running defender Zach Tuohy officially requested a trade to Geelong on Monday, joining teammate Bryce Gibbs in wanting out of Princess Park.

While the Irishman is keen to play for the Cats and the club is interested in signing him, the sticking point remains in finding a suitable deal.

Geelong does not possess a first round draft in this year's draft after trading it to Carlton for Lachie Henderson last year, while salary cap space is also an issue, given the inclusions of Patrick Dangerfield, Zac Smith, Scott Selwood and Henderson in 2016.

To get a deal done for both Tuohy and Richmond's Brett Deledio, who also wants a move to the Cats, Geelong will most likely have to part with a players rather than draft picks.

Richmond has requested midfielder Josh Caddy in exchange for Deledio, while The Age has reported that Carlton will also seek a player for Tuohy.

The Blues will look to add depth to their midfield, with Nakia Cockatoo and Darcy Lang reportedly on their radar.

Both Cockatoo and Lang spent the majority of 2016 in the VFL, however, are seen as important players in the future for the Cats, showing glimpses for brilliance in their short careers.

Cockatoo, drafted with pick 10 in 2014, has played 21 games, while Lang has made 34 appearances for Geelong since being selected with pick 16 in the 2013 National Draft.
